I'm debating racing this season, it just depends how hard I can push myself these next 2 months. I'm slowly working into my old healthy diet, but with finals and holidays comes shitty eating habits and the need to consume gratuitous amounts of alcohol.

    Cat 5 for me haha.

You can run fixed in most any race if your bike is otherwise set up to UCI requirements (two brakes, drops, etc.). There are some races that have a fg only cat.

Riding your bike with other people is free. Racing your bike in sanctioned cycling events usually has an entry fee. Like K-Dub said, some teams have race fee reimbursement. Also team deals on bikes, clothing, components, etc. Even without the race fee reimbursement it's really not very expensive.

Ha I don't think any of us are "Daddy Warbucks". You're not paying to ride, you're paying to race. Bike rides are free, I go on them all the time. The way I look at it, you're contributing to your local race community. It's not like the teams/groups organizing these races make tons of money off these races. In lots of cases they break even after all the permits, etc that go into throwing a large santioned race. Not to mention the amount of hours people have to volunteer. I can attest to that after spending a lot of time helping with the Cyclo De Mayo race that Bicycle Haus threw last year. Garrett, Jesse and a bunch of us put lots of time into helping out at that race. Team sports ftw!

The only thing I fire on all day long is my laptop keyboard.

Now if you'll excuse me, my helicopter has just dropped off my fresh Maine lobsters, and Jay-Z gets pissed if I'm late for our lunch date.

I think BH also hosts some ladies ride from time to time. You should check them out, Celeste. If you want to check out lady roadies, go to the Tribe ride. There's a lot of women who come out for that ride. Might give you a good insight to your competition. There's also another Tribe on Saturday morning and there's tons of women on that ride. And like Jesse said, if you do some racing, we'll all cheer you on!

If I remember correctly, I think most womens races lump categories together. I think it's like 3/4/5 all together and then 1/2 together.

yeah hanna does tours and stuff, i dont think she's into racing.. i'm not sure tho. There is this babe, i mean girl, that rides on the bike haus team named alex, this is her first race season also, so maybe her? Sorry i dont know much about the ladies racing either. I know they group like the 4's and 5's together.. and like the 1-2-3's maybe together?? i think it depends on race to race. But even if u are bunched with other cats you will still be placed accordingly (if your the first cat 5 you'll still win the cat 5 race) does that make sense?? sorry i suck at typing and trying to get my point across.

Jesse's right. About Alex being a babe and about the grouping of categories in a race. If they put the 3/4/5 all together, each category is scored seperately. So the 5's are only racing against the 5's.

thanks dudes. and that definitely makes sense. i figured they would rank them according to cat, but i figured they would race together due to smaller numbers in every group. my only experience paying attention to placing was at the track, and it's a bit easier to figure out considering you're in the stands and everything is right in front of you.

i will definitely come out to the tribe ride and start doing more stuff like that. i'm ready to get serious about riding, so i'm stoked!

I'd love to get into racing this coming up season but I know absolutely nothing about it! Are the races team based or are they solo? As in do I have to be part of a team or can I just enter myself. Also, you all had mentioned a tire pile before - Would I then have to bring a tire or is that just optional. What is the etiquette for these races as well - I've never raced (besides alleycats) so I don't know what you are/aren't allowed to do. Would there be any kind of instructional portion (haha wow) before-hand or whatever? Like I said, I'd like to at least enter and see how I'd do, but I know absolutely nothing besides what crit and cat stand for...Yup

Stop spending so much money on booze and cigarettes and you will be able to afford to race and also become a better rider. It costs money to shut down roads, get the permits, hire the cops to block things off, pay for advertisements, etc. If you have something against this aspect of racing or racing in general go post your angst in the trick thread since no one in here really cares to hear your opinion on how racing is for the bourgeoisie. Even running track costs money and its about the simplest sport a person can do.

^i think you mentioned that you dont have a road bike right? So first you would need one of those. A criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 5 km), often run on closed-off city center streets. No you do not have to bring extra wheels (not just a tire) for the wheel pit but it is nice to have a set in. You can race unattached "no team." But of course it is nice to have a strong or the strongest team like mine! (cat 4 anyways) :) hahaha

I will be racing 4's in NY. No calendar up yet, but I will probably do a few local things since I don't really want to drive 4 hours to race a cat 4 race. Its also my last semester in grad school so I'm sure that will be fun. I'm also going to do the Table Rock Road Race in Oregon and a few local crits there as well. I should be in Switzerland this summer so depending on my work schedule I'd like to do a few cat 4 equivalent races out there. Fall I'll be racing 4's in D.C. or racing somewhere in Austria, Germany, or Belgium.

I don't understand your point. Sanctioned competitive racing in any form cost money; whether it's cars, bmx, motocross, fuck even skateboarding contests have entry fees. Yes, you can do all those activities on the street, which is awesome. But if you want to race against others in a closed course of some sort, typically there's some sort of fee for events. I dont get how this simple fact evades you?

No, I completely understand this, but I also don't see a point in racing cars, bmx, or skating in a competition. It doesn't have any appeal to pay for something you can do for free. I have entered skate comps, but only when a sponsor was taking care of the entry. Hell, if racing was free for me, I would have no problem doing it, except for my lack of speed and endurance.I may or may not have the "tenure" of the BEAST.ct- tcan is the only real man among us

I don't want to drag this out, but...

I have always found that a racing environment is different enough from the everyday training (or dicking-around) environment that it's justified - for me. It definitely takes a different attitude than the everyday doing-of-that-thing. I learned from the Tour de Tucson that racing bicycles probably isn't for me, but I LOVE rowing races. A good race is an incredibly satisfying experience.

It has a lot to do with setting a personal goal, then working towards that goal, and being successful in reaching it (or not quite reaching it, but using that as fuel for the fire). Theoretically, you could decide to ride ___ miles in ___ time on your own, but doing that completely by yourself isn't as satisfying as having company, and unless you announce your intentions to other people, nobody else will really care. It's way less exciting/interesting to have low expectations, or to go into a race knowing that you won't have any competition.

Celeste, good luck with getting started with racing, and have FUN!KEEP TEMPE HOT! (and feed Trifle to the Streetkings)
