I'm in but I'm totally new to racing, so I guess if anybody does cat 5 I'd like to tag along. Never done any serious races with the 6000 dollar cervelo crowd but I held it together pretty well for the PISS ride this wed if that means anything.

    ^^^^^^Chris, is that you?

Hell yeah, there wasn't anyone there last night that couldn't race a cat 5 crit. A huge part of it is riding smart! Stay out of the wind, stay off the front, stay in the top 10, and do not get dropped. If it's a hard pace, stick it out, it'll only last a couple minutes. Nobody wants to blow themselves up and there's very little in the way of team tactics. Wednesday nights and working pacelines is excellent practice.I have nicer cars at home!

    Jeremy,

If you keep on heckling me you might just incite me to get back out there in an effort to prove something. Keep it up. Hopefully your's and other's comments will pay off in a positive way for me.

I am so jealous of Celeste every time she leaves for a ride and I am either stuck in class or writing an essay. Comments like the one you made about me holding her purse get me revved up and wanting to get out there even more badly, so it's a good thing. All I know is that as soon as it starts to look like Celeste is getting faster than me, my ass is jumping back in the kit, essay or no!

But seriously, I am going to make an effort to get back into it next semester. Is there a regular ride that goes on during the weekend? I can't break away during the week due to school and work, but I would like to see if I can still hang in a pace line.

You call it sitting in, I call it riding smart! I have yet to be in a crit that anyone was allowed to get away but I've seen a lot of people stay on the front too long and get blown out the back or not have the goods when it came to the finish line sprint.

If I find myself on the front...10 pedal strokes and I peel off.I have nicer cars at home!

im just starting to race. i just got my bike all built up. where can i find more information about racing?
  3.
i say, for trashcan, we get a race going, any bike welcome, no stupid ass regulations, and no entry fee. yeah? cause i'll get just as aero with risers then then guy/girl next to me with drops.Either we'll be fine, or it will smell like weed and prostitutes

Its the Cancellara strategy. Watch stage 3 i think of the 08 TDF on youtube. The last kilo is fucking sick. I can't sprint too explosively, so thats my strategy for everything really- just try to outjump some people and hope to hell they don't catch up. Yet to be successful.

Hell YEAH! I wouldn't really consider the first one a break per say, he went a little early and thus was able to neutralize the sprinters, a great and well executed move. In the second one, the course was perfect for his early departure and a 8 man or so chase. That was an excellent and well executed strategy.

When Jesse is/was talking about going off the front, I was assuming he meant much earlier in the race, not in the last lap. People often do this but usually to make the field work and their team mates sit in the peleton and rest for the sprints. Rarely do they stay off the front and I've never seen this in a Cat 4 or 5 race.

Make sense?I have nicer cars at home!

I was talking about pro cycling, not domestic crits. In those races people do go off much earlier, but the powerhouses like Voigt and Cancellara usually try to win in some sort of break although Voigt tends to go earlier. If you listen to the commentators in the first video, Cancellara full on went for it, he wasn't trying to neutralize shit or do anything but win and they fucked up by letting him by. I understand your point though and trying illustrate what little strategy I have and putting images to what I was describing.

K-Dub, first of all we actually agree and yes, he DID neutralize the sprinters by going that early....everyone looked confused and didn't react quick enough.

Second, the "alleycat" comment was to Takara about the free race.....nothing to do with real racing or domestic racing what-so-ever.

Third, as far as domestic racing, I'm only speaking from a Cat 5/4 perspective because that's what most on this thread are inquiring about. Although I do sometimes comment on "upper cats", but with no real authority because I obviously have no first hand knowledge and just few observations which I usually clearly state.

Just wanted to explain myself as we were going 3 or 4 different directions at once.I have nicer cars at home!

You can show up the day of the race and get a 1 day license for I believe $5. Other than that, pay your entry fee and come with a road worthy ride (I already know you have) and a helmet and you're good to go. Beyond that, extra wheels are nice. Cat 5 is pretty low key. You can get the schedule and more info at AZcycling

I'll be at the first 2 crits as it sounds like others will be as well. I'm sure as they get closer there will be even more talk and organization to meet up at the races. A nice way to do it so you're not just hanging out by yourself.I have nicer cars at home!

As far as protocols go, cat5 is pretty chill. as long as you have a road bike, helmet, and jersey/shorts you'll be fine. Technically you cant wear a jersey with a buncho sponsors on it (like a team jersey) unless it is part of a sanctioned team, but you can get away with it in the smaller races if youre a 5.sorry kdub. this better?

If you're a 5 you just have to physically be there. They appreciate if you stay on your bike, ride in the correction direction, and avoid collisions, but its not really necessary.
