I can almost guarantee you that most carbon bikes are cheaper to make, but I did have a sticker that stated the FPP disclaimer on my CAAD for a bit.

    Yes, I do.

They're honestly not that different of bikes. The CAAD10 has better geo for me and feels a bit more stiff. Its a bit more harsh, but not much really. I also thought that the internal routing, bb guide, and rear brake guide on the SL4 were poorly designed/thought out and it was kind of annoying. Lots of little things really, but in the end I love both and would be happy with either. My preference is basically based on the fact that I notice so little ride quality wise that I appreciate the better fit/geo and the more responsive feel.

And yes I've tried plenty of both.Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but here's my number, so call me, maybe?

A high end AL bike is better than a medium range carbon bike. There's a reason Nibali and Sagan train on rebranded CAAD10's. With that being said high end is typically high end and comes down to rider preference. I just happen to think that after working at a Specialized dealer that the return on investment is low with anything but the S-Works and maybe the SL4. After seeing lots of busted frames come through the shop I actually got to look into the tubes and they did a piss poor job (mainly on Venges and SL3s) of removing pieces of the air bladders, excess epoxy, and cleaning up the tubes of their frames. Just shows rushed worksmanship, but I still loved my SL3.

I'm not saying AL is king, just that a well-made frame is a well-made frame and they're all pretty damn close these days so it comes down to preference in the end.

Scott- which high end AL race bike have you ridden/raced on for a significant amount of time? State Bikes does not count, sorry.

Its more aero and stiffer actually. They only made a few size runs of the frames and since they were also for the track they had to have super small headtubes. They also claim somehow that using a 1 inch steerer with a short headtube is more aero somehow although it didn't really look like that massive bulge would be.

I honestly think the only reason they rode them was to justify the cost of the program to some auditor that wanted to know wtf happened to all those bike frames that were $30k a piece.
