one of the builds i am working on now is a road set up with an ISP. Trying to work out a design with standard setback in steel. All of the off the shelf toppers are for carbon tubes. The set is HERE

    uses standard seatpost hardware (specialized)

Word, I'm just curious. It looks sturdy- I'd love to see this on an ISP MTB with a specially drawn and butted tube and use the material as a bit of rear dampening. Same theory would apply to a cross bike too I guess.

You think of using Ritchey internals at all? I ask because its really easy to get the Ritchey parts for different shaped saddle rails. Solid work though!
  3.
The design could be adapted to Ritchey components. The machining part would be similar. Specialized offers the hardware separate. Not sure if Ritchey does as well.SKFrames ...what i do with my free time

what he said, its a similar proccess to chrome plateing, and as of recently unless you do a ton of leg work on your own to make your parts baby skin smooth before you send them anywhere to be plated they come back looking like shit.

edit: also why would you want this? Copper tarnishes extremely fast meaning it constantly has to be polish and cleaned to keep fingerprints from turning it all different colors of green.Give an Engineer an inch, and they'll measure it.

Not tryna throw a wet towel on SK's budding operation, just throwing a recommend for Cooper. He made a rando fork for me on a hella hyphy tyte deadline and was super accomodating. If I weren't planning to build my next Wizard bike(s) from scratch, I'd be hitting him up.

There's a copper-plated Puch-Bergmeister that comes into Bike Saviours on occasion. It's 40 years old, has been ridden cross-country a few times and looks fucking awesome. I doubt he wanks it all the time to keep it steampunk-shiny but there's no green patina and the natural tarnish looks good up close.
  6.
Burbs- Thanks for thinking of me for a frame even though you can't spell my name right. Unfortunately I would not be able to build a frame for you at this time. I am still trying to finish up a frame for a friend, which has taken way longer than I wanted.COYOTE FRAMEFAIRING

Job, a baby and wife have ate into frame building, plus the 110 degree garage slow it down. I will be another 6 month after I finish the frame with a few for family members and for myself. If your still in the market at that time hit me back. If SK can build for you I would say go for it, from the looks of his work can build a good frame.

SK that seat mast is killer, will be a nice addition to a frame, post that on FNL at velocipesalon

Why don't they like you on there SK? I wouldn't worry- I know the guy who owns it and a lot of the posters. They're generally douchebags, very slow, and super arrogant about gear. One wrenched at our shop for a while and was a trust funder that blew most of his money on weird esoteric bike shit no one would care about off that site.

Well clearly you just don't know how lively a bike with a 1 inch headtube, steel fork, and hand painted logos really is. Its all about the souplesse of having a frame with the rigidity of PVC pipe and one of the most mundane paint jobs on earth.

^and he basically says that everyone else should GTFO of building bikes. And they lap it up!

I like his back to basics style. The parts he brands are nice, but not entirely unique and unheard of. And his history lessons are worth reading. But there's definitely *some* room left in the tent if a guy can eke out a living by cranking out 50-or-so functionally identical frames a year. He likes to do what he is best at. Doesn't mean that's the only thing that could or should be done. I just don't understand how one could go decades making the same bike, however good it is, EVERY time.

I've met so many of these similarly cranky (and usually old) bastards amongst metal fabricators that I have simply learned to ignore their compensating behavior and bluster while trying to understand the important things that they say and do. That's why chill dudes like Garrett and Andrew are especially rad, you can just straight up talk with them without attending to some bullshit ego.
  10.
SK- who care what some of them think I post from time to time and there are a few that like to see good work like you do, maybe not the guys who are full time, or sach and the like. Trust me that seat mast would make some of the hobby builders and part times drool.

As for R Sach, yeah a lot of the hobby and pro builders stroke him every week. But there is alot of good frame builders on there that share a lot of good info, ( some of the good ones have left, ( KIRK, STEELMAN, STRONG)
I agree Wizard, building that same frame for 20 year fucking boring. But a good living

the frame builder forum on MTBR.com is good as well. good info and mostly only about making your own tooling, and building MTB frames

guys like us always get hard critics because we are a nobody that can build a good frames

I am going to really try to post every friday here, even if its just a single weld or a new tool, get our own FNL going.

WIZARD need some pics of the jig or frames if you got any, I am interested to see where your at with it.

I felt a bit awkward about running around and ogling the shop at R&E Cycles too much, but took a couple of blurry photos while there. I would highly recommend a visit if/when any of you are in Seattle.

Here's an article about the shop's history: http://www.rodbikes.com/articles/historical-tour/historical-tour.html

And blurry photo album can be found here: http://pics.livejournal.com/rebeccmeister/pic/002x39tw/g147

When I took a photo of their frame jig, the guy who was welding nearby said, "I hope that nobody tries to recreate this jig based on photos." He said it weighs around 2000 pounds, and a lot of work went into it, clearly.

I am considering going “offsite” with the frame building operation. Meaning renting a space somewhere in Tempe or Mesa proper most likely. I recently had the opportunity to tour a collective of frame builders in Minneapolis and wondered if anyone here is/would be interested in throwing in. The agreement details would still need to be hammered out, however most likely it would involve space, power, AC, and the security of locking the place up at night and not shared tools per se’. It could all be a pipe dream however it could also be great. Think the ICYC minus the loud music, punks and accompanying odor.

SK- Any thoughts on Gaulzetti or Hufnagel? Considering custom soon and these are two options. Most builders I've gotten in contact with aren't super friendly, willing to worth with anything cool, or enthusiastic about my paint idea.
